M. Van der Velde, during an interpellation in tlig Chamber, stated it was -now found that Leopold had invested £2,800,000 in companies directed by men of straw, including a million in Congo bonds. The money was tainted .with blood, and ought to revert to Belgium to improve the negroes' lot. The Government admitted that Leopold (had deceived them, and that the Government would uphold the nation's rights. ■ Other speakers asserted that £1,200,000 had disappeared from the Congo treasury books, and papers had been destroyed. M. de Woeste paid a tribute to the Princess' cleTicate sense of honor. A resolution from the Left \v«s negatived by 70 to fiC, and M. de Woeste's motion of confidence in the Government was adopted.
