THE HOSPITAL BOARD
MR. BELLRINGER CONSENTS TO STAND. When it became known that Mr. Fred. Bellringer, for three years past die chairman of the Taraiuiki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, had decided not to seek election to the now boar'!, a j number of citizens, for whom Messrs. | Tisscli (Mayor of New Plymouth), F. P. j Corkill (a former chairman of the board), and T. S. Weston acted as spokesmen, waited upon hiili on Saturday morning and requested him to reconsider his decision. The speaker dealt at some length with the responsibilities j of the office, and the admittedly large tax it placed upon the time of the members of the board; also laid stress upon I the conspicuous ability which Mr. Bell- I ringer had displayed as chairman of the j board. It was felt that at this juncture, with the proposals for a new hospital building in view, that tried men should be placed in office. Mr. Bellringer said it had not been his intention to seek a seat on the new hoard. As ha<l be?n said, the work of the hospital entailed a tremendous lot of time, the duties were not always I pleasant, and one had to sacrifice a / great deal of convenience for tiic- administration of the board's affairs. The . relationship between the board and -ill j the offlcialh-iOTil always been very happy | whilst he had been connected with the | institution. The board had been for- | tuna to in (he_ matter of secretary. Mr. j Lepper was the right man in the richt- j iplaco, and relieved the work o! the ; chairman a great deal. The hosnital J has also been particularly fortunate in j its medical .staff —in having such hiahlv \ Qualified men in charsie. He was ex- j tremely sorry when Dr. Leatham inti- | mated his intention of retiring from the ( position of medical superintendent. Mr. j 'Bellrincfer briefly referred to the nro- ; posals for the erection of a new hos- j pital, and, in concluding, said if It was j the wish of the ratepayers he would | place himself in their hands and consent | to he nominated for another term. j Mr. W. Healy. of Fitzroy. was interviewed by a ' Fitzrov deputation on | Saturday morning, and consented to no- j cept nomination.
