STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Resident Agent.) Stratford, Friday. Iki the cricket match between Toko and Kaponga, played at Eltham yesterday, the former secured a victory by 57 runs. " Kapnga went in first, and were dismissed for 31, Dunlop (six for 12) and Cole (three for 15) being responsible for the downfall. Toko made 88, Smith (19) and Cole (17) being the highest scorers'. Toko have now won the South Taranaki championship. The following cricket team will represent South Taranaki against the North on Thursday:—Dunlop, Cole, Smith, Inman, Pratt, McCarthy, Baigent, Moore, Sutherland, Jurd, and Wilkie; emergencies, Mathers and Price. Mr. F. Plumtree had a rather narrow escape whilst motoring yesterday. He was going down a hill near Hawera when lie met h trap. The horse not being motor-broken, commenced to play up, and in trying to give the animal plenty of room Mr. Plumtree got too near the bank and capsized. Fortunately no one was injured, and the car was undamaged. At the bowling green yesterday the Moderns proved too strong for the Ancients, defeating them by 92 to 64. The new bell for the Roman Catholic Church was hung yesterday, and was rung for 'the first time to-day. Cliurch-bells when rung in the early hours of the morn are not aiways a source of joy and delight to those who reside in the immediate vicinity, but of the Catholic Church bell it must be said that it has a deeper note than is customary.
