THE ROSAMOND. • The Rosamond was somewhat late in getting into Nelson on Wednesday ana consequently did not get away from that port for New Plymouth till midnight. She was to have arrived late last night. Owing to this delay the Rosamond will not proceed to Onehunga but will tranship her northern cargo, amounting to a little over 120 tons, to the Corinna, and will remain here till Saturday, when she will load a cargo 01 cheese for transhipment to the Ruapehu at Wellington. COAL FOR NEW PLYMOUTH. The Kini was to have left Greymouth | about 3 o'clock this morning with 500 . tons of railway coal. It was not de- j finitely decided last night whether New | Plymouth or Onehunga would be made 1 the first port of call. THE CORINNA. | The Corinna left Nelson at 4.30 I p.m. yesterday and should arrive here j early this morning. She will have 503 tons of cargo to discharge her?. She proceeds later to Onehunga. returning here on Sunday. An official return just Issued in London shows that in spite oi all modern devices for ensuring safety at sea, including the general use of wireless telegraphy on the various charted highways of tlie Atlantic. 240 ships were last last year. T-h*y represented (says a London correspondent) an aggregate of 477,948 tons. This is a heavy toll to pay to the sea, but it was not so heavy as in previous years, for 275 vessels (509.513 tons) were lost in 1908, and 26S vessels (498,212 tons) in 1907. The causes of these disasters were: Standings 132, foundeiings or abandonments' 47, collisions 2S, fires and explosions 19, and that most terrible of all shipping casualties, missing, 14, which means that 14 ships were lost with all hands, among them being now officially reckoned the Waratah. So that it will be seen that the loss of life has been 'heavy. Of the vesels lost 79 were British and for foreign. The British I losses were 60 steamers, of a total 67 174,967 tons, and ID sailing ships, of 30,460 tons: while the foreign vessels lost were 105 steamers, of 195,734 tons, and 56 sailing vesels, of 76,787 tons. In addition, 5451 partial losses were posted in the course o{ the year. OVERSEA VESSELS TO ARRIVE AT WELLINGTON. From London— 1 Paparoa (due about March 6). sailed on j January 10. via Auckland.
