PARCEL POST.
THE SYSTEM SIMPLIFIED. • One of the direct results of a ve.'j useful observation trip around the "world In* Mr. Robertson (secretary to the Post Office) is the inauguration of a simpler and more effective means of carrying on the parcel post system. It jCflme into operation on Tuesday, and ..will pTobablv result in saving to the New Zealand Post Office of about . £IOOO per annum. Instead of each postmaster 'having to make ouFa list of the parcels despatched by each mail—a very heavy item for stationery and clerical labor—every person presenting a package for transmission will write on a card his name and address and that of the recipient. This card bears a number, and a corresponding one is .placed on the parcel. The parcel is without further trouble, and the card goes by letter mail to the same .office, where its arrival indicates that the parcel is about. Upon delivery, the card is initialled by the officer, and is ,tben sent to the head office. Firms doing a lar«c parcel •business will be supplied will be supplied with special labels and cards. Registered and insured parcels will continue to be carried uncfer the old system. This is as far as the innovation has gone, but Mr. ■Robertson's report upon his observations indicates that there is no goad reason why the maximum weight °* parcels should not be increased, for offices served by rail or steamer, to 20lbfor more. This would attract a large business which the Department does not handle at present.
