A WELLINGTON DICTATORSHIP
"THE POWER OF VETO." By Telegraph. —Press Association. ' Wellington, "East Night. The Wellington College Board of Governors proceeded to-day to the election of a chairman. At the last meeting Mr. A. de B. Brandon declined re election as chairman, unless he was given the power of veto over any vote of expenditure carried by the Board of which he might disapurove. The. matter was then deterred till to-day, when Mr. Brandon was again proposed. The Hon. Dr. Findlay asked whether the appointment carried with it the conditions insisted on last month. Mr. Brandon said that since last meeting he had given the matter a great deal of thought, .and had come to the conclusion that perhaps he was a«kin2 more than the Board might be expected to give. At the same time, in accepting the chairmanship, he wished to saV that if he saw any proposal for expenditure which in his opinion would entail reference to th; Bank or to the Government, he would oppose it, and, if defeated, he would resign. Dr. Findlay said the position taken up by Mr. Brandon should not be taken .up by am' chairman. *lt amounted to a threat that if the Board opposed its judgment to that of the chairman, it would involve his resignation. Mr. Brandon said he was not making a threat, but if the Board undertook any work which would suit in its not being able to pay for without assistance, lie could not pos»ib]y continue as chairman and manage the finances oi tfte Board. Mr. Brandon was then elected without dissent.
