Sir, —It was with regret that I, amongst the majority of cricketers and lovers of the game, read of the decision Ot the North Taranaki. Cricket. Association to play fifteen men against the Australians.* Such decision is most uupportsmanlike and unnecessary, as we J havS absolutely no chance oi winning the game. Then, as we pride ourselves I on Wins lovers of fair play, let us be i British." Perhaps some of those wiio i supported such a discreditable decision ! are "angling for a game. Some argued i that we played eighteen men against the English eleven some yars ago, but as our cricket has improved beyond a'l question since then, such argument is scarcely applicable now. If the present decision is still adhered to (which, for the sake of good old Taranaki, I hone will not be the case), might I suggest that Mr. Clegg 'earmark' the last four so that we may" see of what benefit they have been to the team?—l am, etc., CRICKETER. AN HISTORIC MATCH. The match at Lancaster Park between the Australians and a Canterbury team will remind old cricketers of the first, content of the kind which took place here lust thirty-two years ago (remarks' the Lyttelton Times). The first Aus-, tralian team was then on its way to England, and it included New Zealand in its itinerary largely to give the players the practice together which tliey required in view of the great task they had undertaken. The other provinces put twenty-two men in the field against the visitors, but Canterbury played only fifteen. The match was commenced on the Hagley Park ground on 19th January, but heavy rain fell on the following day, and it was not until 22nd January that the game was resumed. It was brought to a conclusion on 23rd January, and resulted, as every local enthusiast is proud to recall, in a signal victory for the Canterbury team.' The first day's play saw the Australians all out for 46, and the Canterbury team with 105 on the board and four wickets still in hand. On the second day the local men carried their score to 135, and the Australians made 127 with the loss of six wickets. On the concluding day the visitors added only 16 to their overnight score ; making their total 143, and leaving the fifteen witli 55 runs to make to win. This they did with the loss of eight wickets, and for a week or two Canterbury could talk of nothing but! their brilliant achievement.

The. following will play for Carrington Road against Wanderers on the Sports Ground to-morrow (Thursday): Benbow,- Perham, South- ' l . •' Avery, Greene, Gordon, Kirig, Gwilliam, Bnhertson, Lash and Cooper. The following players will represent Fire Brigade against Tnglewood at Inglewood on Thursday: Clarke, Billings, L. Bullot, J. Best, O'Halloran, I. Bullot, R. Woods, Gunson, Roch, W. Sadler, Girling, Bullot, B. A. Higgs.
