AN M.P.'S "BRUSH."
FIGHT IN THE STREET An extraordinary scene was witnessed in Cambridge Road, Hammersmith, a. suburb of London, on (ith January, feir William Bull, Unionist M.P. for Hammersmith. was addressing a number of workmen on their return from their mid-day meal. One member of Use audience rendered himself conspicuous t» V his interruptions, and one remark called forth Sir William Bull's resentment. Sir William and the interrupter soon engaged in a hand-to-hand combat, which was only terminated by the ar rival of the police. Sir William Bull afterwards gave tlw following account of the occurrence: "There . were about two hundred men present, and one of them was very persistent and offensive in his i, HermitioiK 1 know the man,, and 1 know he was interrupting simply to kill the limited time which was at the disposal of the men to stay and listen to my remarks. "At last the man said. 'I am not a solicitor who is paid to tell lies.' I said, "That is a very oU'eusive observation, and I will punch your head.' I jumped over the door of the motor-car which 1 had been speaking from, ami I struck him oil the chest, -aying. "1 can't, allow any man to call me a liar.' lie retaliated. and my hat. was knocked of)' my head.
"The crowd was evidently greater amused, and tliey immediately formed a ring, being intent on seeing fair play' and nobody interfered until tlic p»liff came. My opponent hit me on tlic check, and I : punched him on the face several times. I was handicapped by having my great coat on, hut the contest had lasted two or three 111in11t.es ■when a police inspector c;;n:e u;> ana said, 'Sir William, this must not go on,' and then the ring broke u]i ami friends intervened and separated "A man in the crowd shouted to mfc that my conduct had been most un'gentlemanlv, to which I replied, "J am an Englishman before I am a gentleman. If anybody rails me a liar 1 shall use my fists, so that any man knows what to expect.' T have had Some experience of boxing, and quite enjoyed the 'brush.'"
