AMERICAN TRAM STRIKE.
POLICE FORCE POWERLESS. By Cable.—.Press Association. —Copyright New York, February 23. Seven thousand police were powerless to restore order at Philadelphia, and the mayor appealed tor 3000 State militia. The appearance of troops increased the strikers'* fury. Bayonet charges cleared the streets temporarily. Fifty casualties occurred. A pitched fight took place between the police and the strikers in the Germantown quarter, the police using their clubs mercilessly. Many were wounded and sent to the hospitals', and 300 arrested, including the strikers' leader, Clarence Pratt.
