EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Hoard was heid at the Board's oiiice on Tuesday night. There were present: Messrs. J. Wade (chairman), G. A. Adlam, W. C. Cargill, H. Trimble, A. H. llalcombe, W. Rogers, VV. L. Kennedy, and A. Morton. The returning officer reported that Mr. VV. (J. Cargill had been elected to the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. J. D. Morison. The chairman extended a welcome to Mr. Cargill on his first a'ppeav:\ikf the Board's table, and Mr. acknowledged the welcome. SECRETARY'S VISIT TO WELLINGTON. Mr. P. S. Whitcombe, secretary of tha : ~ard, reported on his recent visit to ellington as follows': —"1 am very ;i.i-ased to say that I received much ? .i.ormation that will be valuable to •-:!y position, and that nearly the whole i .i\ the grants applied for have been made. The following matters were dktu»sed: —Grants for new schools at Newall and York, additions to Awatuu.., Hillsborough, Huiroa. Waitara, and West End; rents of buildings us'ed for school purposes; system on which building grants are made, superannuation? checking railway tickets for children attending schools; free scliool books; annual returns; probationers' regulations'; quarterly return of salaries paid; staffs and salaries regulations. The Secretary for Education went through the items with me first ; and then intra a need me to the officers of the Department; dealing with the various matters, and I have every reason to be grateful for the courtesy shown me." The chairman said that he was s'ure this report would prove of great valu» to the Board. The secretary was allowed £6 expenses. ARCHITECTS' REPORT. The architects, Messrs. Sanderson and Griffiths, reported that the whole of the painting contracts were now complete. Plans and specifications had been prepared for the Iriglewood Technical School and for additions' to Waitara School, for both of which tenders were now in—The report was received. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. The following teachers were granted leave of absence:—F. H. Mason three days, and Miss Cameron one week (Pihama); X. D. Day (Huirangi) three days. I MA-NGOIIEI. The action of the Mangorei school committee in closing the school owing to a supposed outbreak of scarlatina was confirmed. STRATFORD. The secretary of the Stratford High School committee asked that the Board .should have a statement compiled showing the total of voluntary contributions for school purposes collected by the committees of the Education Distrist for the last three years, and also endeavor to obtain similar returns from other boards. In view of the divergence of opinion existing between the Department and the boards as to the adequacy of the funds placed at the disposal of boards, the information would probably be found useful. It was resolved that owing to the difficulty in showing the voluntary work done in outlying districts it would be impossible to give a fair return. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The report of the Finance Committee was read as follows:—That tenders be called for the erection of new schools at York, for additions- to schools at Ivaimiro and Awatuna, and for a school teacher's residence at Tarata; that- the Tongaporutu committee be paid the subsidy of £2 as promised; that the Department be again written to re the grant for Newall school; that a gate and posts be supplied to the Hillsborough committee on the usual con- 1 ditions; that the earthwork recommended to lie done at Pohokura be left in the hands of Mr. Kennedy, with power to act; that Mr. Pennington be paid the sum of £l3 for use of room tit Purangi from September, 1908, to | March, 1909; that tenders' be called for ; school furniture; that the subsidy of | £5 lie paid to the Makahu school com- ] mittee; that the request of the Fitzroy j school committee for repairs to school residence be referred to the chairman, ■ with power to act; the request of the j Tututawa school committee for the ad- [ i dition of a porch and bathroom to the 1 school teacher's residence was referred to the chairman for further enquiries; that the matter of painting Hills- | borough residence be referred to the^ ! chairman; that the contractor at Marco be paid the amount of his contract anfij £lB 17s extras, and that the Marco ' committee be granted hooks: that the usual subsidy be granted Okoke for shelter-shed; that necessary drain-pipes be supplied to Ngaere committee; that the overseer he refunded any extraordinary travelling expenses—The rej port was adopted. } GENERAL. J Mr. W. L. Hughes', headmaster ot trie Waiongona scnooi, applied to the Board for a subsidy of £1 for £1 on a suin of £7 which tlie excursion committee had in nand i,r- n;; fpent in establishing a nchool library.—-It was decided to reply that the Board does not now .subsidise school libraries. The Frankley school counr.ittee were granted permission to open their scliool at 9 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. durina the summer months. Mr. Peter Burkhardt's appointment as a member of the Kaimntf. school committee, vice Mr. Collingwood. resigned, was confirmed. In reference to the application of Purangi scliool committee for n full-time school, the chairman of the Mntau committee stated they were of opinion it would be better to remain as at present for the time being. Tt was resolved to forward this letter to the Purangi committee. The resignation of Mi-s M. E. Berasten as assistant in the Waitara schotl was accepted. The report of the Reserves Committee was received and adopted. The Bird Road school committee is to be informed that the Board lias received a complaint that their school site is infested with noxious weeds, and requests them to take the necessary steps to eradieate the same. Accounts to the amount of £2359 5s lOd were pas'sed for payment, and the Board rose.
