'A DRUNKEN MAORI. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Cambridge, February 23. A native charged with cruelty to a horse, by riding the animal to death and then leaving it on the roadside, was fined £2 and costs £4. The police said liquor was the cause. A certain (Kingite element had got into the Maungatautari tribe and demoralised a large section. Several prohibition orders were granted against Maoris. The Magistrate declared that lie would show little mercy to people supplying prohibited natives with drink. 1 DRUNKENNESS ON PREMISES. Wellington, February 23. John Shelly, licensee of the Foresters' Arms Hotel was fined £lO for permitting drunkenness on his premises. The Magistrate held that the defendant had shown carelessness' in permitting a drunken man to enter and remain in the bar. BREAKING AND 'ENTERING. Carterton, Tebruarv 23. Albert and William Stockbridge, charged at Carterton this morning before Messrs. A. Armstrong and James Baillie, Justices of the Peace, with breaking and entering Mr. Rathbone's j office on February 10, were committed for trial at the Supreme Court, Masterton, on February 28.
