ATHLETICS.

There was a fair attendance at the Recreation Grounds last night when 100 yds and 220 yds events, promoted by the New Plymouth Amateur Club, were contested. * The 100 yds was run in heats, being won by J. Stohr, with Tressider second. Burdekin won the second heat, with Grant second. The time for each heat was 10 1-osec, whijh time Ward, who was unplaced from scratch, was also credited with. The .final was won by Stohr, with Tressider second, in lOsec. The 220 yds was won by Burdekin, with Ward a good second, in 23 2-ssec. This race was run in semi-darkness. Kerr gave an exhibition walk, and ,was warmly applauded at its close. Ward and Kerr leave for Auckland to .night. Kerr is is in fine form, but Ward ,1s scarcely in his best condition yet, though two days in Auckland may consderably improve him. J. Wilton was just beaten by inches in the 440 (says the New Zealand Times, reporting Saturday's sports meeting in Wellington), and as the winner's time was 51 l-ssec, the man who ( can 'beat him from the same mark will -deserve to be a champion. Ths 440 at Auckland should be a memorable race, /with Wilton, Harding (Napier) and •Ward (New Plymouth), all running for Wellington. Each of these men is a r<al top-noteher, and the strngg'? for supremacy should be inspiring.
