The natives here were making great preparations for the visit of the Hon. James Carroll, who was expected here on Sunday last, in connection with the opening up of a large block of native land, known as the -Mokau Jones" estate. However, news was received that he could not come, owing to the visit of Lord Kitchener to Wellington, and the visit was' postponed, causing great disappointment among the natives. Mr. Twiss, Crown Lands ranger, has during the past few days been over tne block of land referred to. with a view I of reporting to the Government as to its quality, etc.. and suitability for su'i- [ division. I During the past few weeks there I have been numerous excursions' up our pretty river, the oil launch being in almost daily commission. Mr. Stewart, of Wellington, the successful tenderer for the local ferry, is now in charge. He is very prompt at answering calls, and travellers are thus able to get across with very little delay. There is no doubt, however, that a bridge, would be a great convenience to both settlers and travellers.
