The harbormaster, Captain Newton, has started a very systematic and scientific survey of the harbor and its approaches. He has marked out the wharf in quarter-chains, and from each jnark a boat goes out at a right angle, keeping "dead" on the mark all the time, and sweeps the sea floor with a .long iron bar suspended on ropes. As soon as an interruption to- the bar's progress is struck the lead is put down and exact soundings taken, after which the spot is marked and the dredge put ,to work to remove the obstruction, may be a rock or a mound of sand. In this way a smooth sea floor is assured. Already some boulders, weighing up to half a ton, have been removed from alongside the wharf. The iron bar is being used pending the installation of a system of sweeping the harbor with wire-netting, which Captain Newton has under consideration. Tho present system, it may be added, is no Jess reliable than the one in which netting is used, but it is slower.

The cargo taken from Waitara by the liner Kaikoura consisted 0f:—4404 quarters beef, 4 loins beef, 4404 carcases mutton, 3318 carcases lamb, 904 boxes frozen sundries, 25 sacks tails, 1070 bales wool. 190 casks tallow, 104 casks oleo, 12 casks casings, 45 casks pelts, 129 bundles hides.
