His office has not been a sinecure, either, and his powers have been called into requisition in enforcing the wearing of the neck-to-knee costume. The costumes must also be of some dark material.
The committee appointed by the Borough Council to arrange for the se.-ies of subsidised. municipal band concerts hy the Taranaki Garrison Band met last night. Mr. A. E. Watkins was appointed chairman. It was decided-that the band be requested to give six concerts for the £lO subsiuy, two conceits to be given in each ward. A schoolmaster wrote to the Wanganui Education Board asking for an extra day's leave for the Kitchener camp at the Hutt. H e put it thus quaintly: '"We are quite willing to travel all night on Saturday, but to come here without getting on board the Powerful, and without seeing Parliament House, is to treat the boys as Tantalus was treated in Hades. Tantalus, the old rascal, deserved if, but my boys don't." At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. H. S. Fitzherbert, S.M., a man named John Gilmour James, a
second offender, was fined ss, or in default 48 hours', with hard labor, for drunkenness. F. Shodroski was also proceeded against for failing to comply with an order of the Court for maintenance of his sister. A Southern contemporv observes that the enormous number of small birds in .the Temuka district is shown by the, quantity of eggs and heads taken to the Temuka Road Board office every Saturday by boys. The price is 3d a dozen, anil on a recent Saturday £25 was paid out.. The largest number taken at one time' was IG2 dozen, collected by a boy from Rangitata Tsland. and on that day another boy from the same district took in 100 dozen. Lots of from 50 to 90 dozen are fairly common.
. The Auckland Press Association teegram regarding the new world's record for the 220 yds breast-stroke swimming was slightly misleading. The message stated that C. Atkinson, of Canterbury, • won the race in world's'record time, clipping 3 3-5 seconds off P. Mason's time of Mrniu 14sec. "Miller's Sporting Pamphlet," however, shows the previous world's amateur record to have been established by P. Matsou on February 2tfih at Kalgoorlie, when he covered the distance in 3min 10 3-osee. Atkinson's time still stands as a world's record, having clipped a second off the record. ' The celebrated '-Hon. Roddy" gonl nugget, which was recently discovered .in Ross, on the West Coast, by two miners, named Scott and Sharp, 'is now in New Plymouth and may be seen at the Criterion Hotel up till to-morrow. It is the largest eve<r discovered in •.he dominion, weighmg 990z. 12 dwt. I2gr*.. and is worfh """£4OO. It is a splendid sample of pure gold and has quite -in unique form. Looking at it on one edge it shows the distinct shape of a man's face, whilst looking at it another way it gives the impression of a lady's shoe. The history attached to thcjclaim where -the specimen was found is rather interesting. Some twenty years ago an old miner named McCarthy who was working this same .ground said he dreamt that he would find a large nugget in his claim, but his career was ended by his falling over the tail-race and breaking his neck. Since then the claim had been unworked until last September. when Scott and Sharp thought thev would try the .ground, and they h,id only been working a few weeics wncn they made the find of their lives by dropping on this nugget. Tt was named the "Hon. Roddy" "after the Minister of Mines. Tt was purchased by the Boss Hospital Committee, who are now offering it as a prize in an art union iu aid of their building fund. Messrs A. W. ■Peebles (secretary) and Roht. Foul ■ (treasurer) will be pleased to exhibit j the nugget to anyone calling at Ihe Criterion Hotel, and also to dispose 'if art union tickets, the price of which is ss.
