I TAHANAKI JOCKEY CLUB MEETING. FIRST DAY. In splendid weather the T.J.C. autumn meeting was commenced yesterday. The grounds and truck were looking their best, and there was a very good attendance. The racing throughout the day was interesting, and speculation was' | brisk. The sum oi £6300 10s passed !■ through Uie totahsator, compared with £OO2I on the corresponding any last year. 'Eleven bookmakers were licensed, at a"iec of £2O 10s. The racing opened with the First Hack Hurdles, for which Maggie Paul was installed favorite, with Waione next in demand! The St. Paul mare easily disposed of her opposition when asked. Five saddled up for the Stewards' Handicap, for which Hohungatahi was installed the hottest of favorites, carrying three-fifths of the total investments on the machine. Tarina was never headed, although Karerba' entered a vigorous challenge in the straight. The favorite was never seriously in the hunt. In the Timaru Handicap Red Wing led throughout, with Kanewara always in close attendance. The favorite Toanga did not reproduce Hawera form. Nine horses saddled up for the Cup. Mr. Prosser's representative was the jpublie fancy, with Wait'apu, Mendip and Sandstream well supported. The latter were very slow to move, and practically did their chance in at the barrier. ' The favorite was in a handy position throughout, and except for Uhlando's strong "bid in the straight, was at no time seriously threatened.
Swimming Beit was in galloping mood [ in flie First Welter Handicap, and j snatched victory from old Cyrene when J he looked all over a winner. Perolina I was a hot order for the event, but never j flattered her supporters. Silva went out third favorite for the Okato Hack Handicap, for which Research and Paul were in demand. Research was momentarily prominent enter'rag the straight, but wa s left when j Silva put in his run. j In the Flying Handicap Clemora was j the public fancy, Golden Eagle carrying ! most of the remaining money. The latter got a flying start, but Jenkins eased his mount three furlongs from home en- , ablin'g Clemora to get on terms. The j favorite carried too many guns in the i ensuing struggle. Prancer, St. Kildare, and Emblem were i popnlaT fancies for the concluding event, ■ but the first-named pair never for a | moment flattered their supporters. Em- j blem won practically as she liked. ! The arrangements for tne meeting generally were in capital train, the secretary (Mr. E. P. Webster) and the offials performing their duties in businesslike manner. Mr. O'Connors starting was uniformly good. Some complaints were heard regarding" one of the totalisator machines, which was not registering the totals, and the proprietors should endeavour to have the mechanism repaired to-day. Appended are fSe results. ' -' "''
