AMUSEMENTS.

FIREWORKS DISPLAY. There was a very moderate attendance last night at the fireworks display in the Recreation Grounds. It wis very unfortunate that a southerly breeze came up, and prevented the lighting of the hundreds of Chinese lanterns that had been placed in position during the afternoon. The illumination of the grounds with these fairy lights is always attractive, and the display was robbed of one of its strong features by the wind. The rockets and other explosive pyrotechnic packages, recently imported from England, were of first"! quality, and the display passed off well., It is to be regretted that the puo'icr does not give more liberai patronage to functions of this kind, for the greater the support the more extensive the purchases of the Board and the more'attractive the fireworks. The Garrison \ Band, under Mr. C. H. Anderson, plar-j ed during the evening on the band rotunda. " j HEWITT'S PICTURES. Hewitt's Pictures submitted an excellent programme of moving pictures to a good house last evening. For tonight's change a special lot of pictures is to be screened. Amongst others, "The Mended Lute" is a stirring romance of the Dakota or Sioux Indians of North America. The incidents .>f the story are laid in the neighborhood of Spirit Lake, just before the outbreak of war. The subject as a whole is full of poetical romance and dramatic intensity, the canoe chases being the most picturesque and thrilling ever shown in cinematography. Another grand picture w "Pompeii," showing the dead city as it is to-day. The views are most comprehensive and include the great gace and streets, the massive theatre and the gladiators' quarters, public fountains, wine shops, a fountain built up in mosaic, a general view from the Forum, the Vetti's house, etc. As a , eccenic picture, this stands out as one . of the best shown to a local audience., Still another star film is "The Army of Two," an incident in the American Revolution, that is brimful of stirring in-1 oident. A large number of other nne I fine subjects, detailed in our advertising j columns, is to be shown.
