'' (From Our Own Correspondents). 1 " WAITARA. • ." ■I <l A special meeting of the Waitara 80-rough Council was held on Monday evening for the purpose of accepting tenders for the tunneling at tke waterworks. The tender of Messrs. Coddy ■ and Hurlestone, being the only tender, was accepted. The tender was 7s 3d for tunnel, 2s (id for inlet, and Is' (id for outlet per yard. It was decided, on the ' recommendation of the engineer, to do the work at the reservoir by day labor. | The Waitara Municipal Brass Band, • under Bandmaster T. B. MeConnell, gave a sacred concert on the camp reserve f on Sunday afternoon, before a large audience. A collection was taken up in aid of the contest funds, and realised the respectable sum of £6 17s. The members of the band made their first appearance hi their new uniforms, which are of a neat pattern, and the public j speak in terms of extreme satisfaction ! in respect to the general appearance j and fit. The band propose to hold a. garden party on the 24th instant and also give a social concert at Messrs. Sole Bros.' beautiful grounds, probably on Sunday week. The members of the Clifton Rowing Club propose to enlarge the boathouse. The present shed is to be match-lined ' and floored, and to be used for social , purposes, and a new building for the , housing of the boats is to be extended ito the river. The total cost of the improvements will be about £250, which ! includes a piano and seats for the social 3 hall. * j j TONGAPOKUTU. ' During the past week bush fires have • been in evidence, and good burns have ( : been reported all along the road to ' Waitanga. s j The Hon. James Carroll is expected jl , here about the 20th instant. His visit •is for the purpose of meeting the native owners of that native land lease known as the Mokau Jones lease. I hope that the Government will succeed in purchasing this block of land, as settle-' ment will soon follow. I hear that nine- I teen out of twenty-one of the native I owners are willing to sell. Two are not that way disposed, but as thes'e two* are already well provided with land, I don't think this will prevent something', satisfactory being done. - j Mrs. Von Stunner and family are re- i moving to Waitanga north road during the coming week, and another'j family (Mr. C. Trass, wife, and four children) have arrived here from Feilding. As Mr. Trass is a good carpenter' his services are in much demand. ' Four or five of our Makarakia settlers' are arranging to have timber cut for new cottages; some 25,000 feet' ■being required. i Mr. F. Bishop, assistant road overseer, passed through here en route for Awakino. I hear that Mr. Bishop is to be stationed at the northern end of this road district for some time. The s.s. Pitoitoi is' expected at the beginning of the week. Some of the inland settlers with their children have during the summer months visited the beach, especially on Sundays, bathing in the briny being the, attraction. I should like to warn those who frequent the beach at this time of the year that on two occasions our pilot has discovered the katipo spider under the old driftwood. He has not been ■ mistaken, as lie knows these little insects, as he frequently met with them on the Oroua Downs estate on the San- • don-Carnarvon tramline, at the back of Palmerston North.
