Racecourse booths and small beers have always been mentioned in the one breath, and a large, dry Maori at Hawera on Thursday gazed wistfully at the public bar, toying with a sixpennybit the while, and s'oliloquised: "I like tu long peer. ' No goot te pony glass. I tink I wait till I get to iVormanliy. Get te pig glass there for hikipene. Te long peer efery time!" Don Hannibal is again reported amiss in Sydney. It looks as if Mr. W. Lyons has made a bad bargain this time, and will never get a race out of the promising Auckland-bred horse. Tanckaha, who broke down during the running of the Takapuna Cup, lias returned home, and will be given an extended spell at his owner's place. The Conqueror mare Succession, who is' reported to be fairly fast, will be trained by Albert, Goodman at irentham in future. There must be plenty of money for the successful jockey in the Old Dart. "Danny" Maher recently paid £OOOO for Crnpwell Court, a real palace of a residence. They cannot do those things in New Zealand, however. The Melbourne jockey, S. 15. Ferguson, has accepted a retainer of £IOOO to

ride in Austria, and left for the land of promise last week in company with B. Carslake, the Australian who has been riding so successfully in those parts'. The secretarial deparlnumt of :h ■• Egmont Racing Club stands execedinj^y .well with tii.' ;'i!'-.-mi'ii just now. At the summer meeting last week the scribes \vi>re given every facility and af.tontion, Mr. lv Funtham heinir a very I oMiging and prompt press steward. ; The •■tote" figure*, dividends, and ul j .such information were supplied within a j few minutes of the linish of each rac.\ ! It's the little things like this tnat I count.

Churton, of Wanganui, for 26gns, and the chestnut gelding Clemency changed ownership at 30gns, Mr. J. M. Laurent, of Hawera, being the purchaser. Mr. J.
