MR. MERRIMAN'S ILL-ADVISED SPEECH.
By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Capetown, February 11.
Mr. Smuts, speaking at Middleburg, said he believed Mr. Merrhnan's Worcester speech was greatly niisundsrstood. Mr. Merriman was an outspoken old warrior who fired a shot which disconcerted the whole of the South Africa, but the situation he created would pass over. South Africans must get rid of the provincial feeling and seek the welfare of the whole. He added: "I advocate a non-racial policy for organisation of defence and filling empty spaces with whites." A SCATHING CRITICISM. Received 13, 5 p.m. Capetown, February 12. Mr. Jamieson denounced Mr. Mer-i----man's resuscitation of racialism. He declared: "We want 'a best-man government,' independent of party or race. Pending the repuditation of 'Merrimania' by Mr. Botha or the responsible leaders, the Progressives must .ouckle on their armor." Mr. Jameson is unable to believe Mr. Botha wosild head a Government planned by Mr. Merriman.
