(from Our Own Correspondent). 1
Stratford, February 11
On Thursday, the occasion of the .annua] school excursion, there was an exodus of Stratfordonians to New Plymouth. The bowlers and tennis pi a vers took advantage of the holiday to visit your city, whilst hundreds 'of people spent the day on the heach. It is very I pleasant to notice {hat the residents o'f Kew Plymouth have awakened to the value of Nature's endowments and that the work of improving the sea-front is steadily progressing. Time will he •vhen to the visitor the attractions of the _seashore will equal those of the Recreation Ground and garden*, whose fame is known throughout the Dominj ion. Fat returning to the subject mai- | ter, the excursion "*\vas a great success, and everybody appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Xot a hiteh happened to mar the pleasure of the day, and Mr. C. D. Sole, chairman of the committee. and his colleagues are to he congratulated 011 th? excellence of the arrangements. About the only people left in Stratford were the staffs of the banks, and for all the business that they transact ?d these institutions might as well have closed. It do« seem curious that whilst saints' days, which to the public are of no interest. Rave to be observed as holiday?, in a.ldition to the hanlcs closing on variolic show-days, that an arrangement cannot be arrived at whereby one of these days is changed for that on which th" scfcinJ excursion is held. Mr. and Mrs. T. Render and Dr. Car■berv, of Stratford, officiated as judg"s at the Onuna*ke Horticultural Show this ■week. They speak in very complimentary terms of the exhibits and tho treatment tliey received. There was not a great amount <if interest falcen in tho borough election on Wednesday. Durins the afternoon tlie amusing and uncommon spectacle of leading member nf the Trade and \oLiccn=e parties driving up in the same cab to vote was observed and caused the candidate, whose vehicle it was. to remark that lie was pleased that he .was more successful than the fiovernniont in bringing the two parties together. Mr. Rhodes, the new licensee of the .Stratford Hotel', took possession to-day. Mr. and Mrs. Lawless. 1 understand, intend taking up their residence in Stratford on thi'ir property on the East Road, which they recently purchased from Mr. Morison.
The new premises of the Stratford .Club are now completed and the Club will take possession to-morrow. Their old premises have been taken over by the Eirmont Club. This flub, which will open on Tuesday night, is meeting with excellent support, and has already « membership of over 100.
I underhand that tne Stratford Vt.icinj Club ma'de a profit of over €IOOO at their recent meeting. Mr. Tleigfiwny. a member of the Stratford Club's lawn tennis team, which vi-ited New Plymouth on Thursday, w:k taken il! on the return jonr.liey, causing his companions considerable anxiety. On the arrival of the train at Stratford Dr. Carbery was telephoned for and \va« sonn in attendance. The cause of Mr. TTeisrhwav'? :n----•lisposition was n sun-stroke. To-day Mr. Heighway. though still confined to ■his house, is considerably better.
