BIBLE READING IN SCHOOLS.
To the Editor.
Sir,—Your correspondent, writing in Tuesday's paper under the signature ot "C.W.W.," is scarcely fair. The passages quoted from the Bible are not and were never intended to be taken as literal history. The Bible does not profess to teach history, or the sciences. Revelation is not needed for these
things. The critics, higher or ■ lower, do not seem to rise to the higher plane ot the great interior principles and things that in every book of the wo".'d are alike, viz., That there is a Gou, and that He is. one;. that He is the creator of/all things; that all Tife "is from Him. and that He controls all;
that good is to be done and evils to i..e shunned: that obedience to His commandments brings happiness, disobedience affliction: that there is a life after death; and tfiat by 'our actions -we me fitting-' : o*rH-selves' : for it either for -weal or woe; that the purpose of life is to do £ood: that ■ kindness, forgiveness, purity, and uprightness are virtues; and their opposite*, evils. There need be no controversy about teaching these thing*-in our public schools without inferforing in anv way with comtmisorv. free' and secular education.— I am,'etc.', < ; "XHW CHUM.-'
