SUMMER MEETING—FIRST DAY
The Egmont Racing Club's summer meeting vv;i> (.•ummciieud at liiiwera yesterday, under mvorable weather ooii.liliun.-. Tiie attendance ot iiil l public was good, and the gate receipts larger than last year's. Hie iawn presented | an animated senile. '1 he eour.se ami up- : j.ointnieuts were, as usual with the Kgmont L'lub, in eapital order, and a most successful and enjoyable meeting r* suited. The racing was interesting, the fields in most cases being good, and in the Meremere liack Flat no less than eighteen horses went to the post, making a fine spectacle as the field strung iself out along the rails. The llaweva Municipal Band played a well selected ■programme on tile lawn during the afternoon, under the baton of Mr. F. Brunette. The various officials carried out their duties with the ease and efficiency born of long experience in their respective positions, the secretarial duties being ably and courteously performed by Mr. J. Turton. The finest race of the tiav was the big race, Tor the Egmont Cup. There were only six acceptors, liut aD went to the post. The field was bunched throughout the greater part Of t*e journey, but in the latter stages first Sir Prize and then Milan challenged the leaders, the latter making a great run on the outside right up tiie straight and snatching the Victory by a short head from Tiptoe, whose rider was evidently taken by surprise, thus justifying the confidence of the public who had made him a war/a favorite. The sum of £OBO6 passed through the totalisator, compared with £7030 on the corresponding day of last year. Twelve bookmakers were licensed. Results:— »-•air if
