GREEK BRIGANDS EXEOUTED.

Four Greek brigands have been executed at Smyrna. They belonged i» a band who attempted to kidnap a European named Patersou and also captured and held other Europeans for ransom in 1808.

AN ASYLUM IN RUSSIA.
St. Petersburg, February 8.
Russia has granted Rakhim Khan an asylum. It refused to extradite him hecause he was a political offender. Rakhim Khan and his tribesmen, belonging to a district, near the Caucasus, besieged and seized the town of Arrfebil in Prysia.
A HEW PLAY.
Paris, February 8.
Rostand s '* Chanticler" was produced in Paris before a brilliant audience. The production included one hundred and fifty marvellous costumes of cocks, liens, pheasants, blackbirds, owls, etc., at a cost of £28,000. It is a fantastic satire on human follies, is lyrical, full of fervour and verve. The production created a deep impression despite its eccentric setting. Guitry, Madame Simonc, Jean Coquelin, and Sidney. a.n Australian actor, as Gamecoek, were great successes.
VIOLET CHARLESWORiTH.

Violet Charlcsworth and her mother have been arrested on a charge of obtaining money at Derby by false pretences.
(Violet Charlesworth created a sensation in January last year bv disappearing after a motor car accident, in V'hich slile was supposed to have been thrown over a. cliff and drownod. She turned up later and was made a bankrupt. In the course of examination in bankruptcy it was disclosed that she owed very large sums of money.)
