VICTORIAN TRAIN DISASTER
A TRAIN WITHOUT A BRAKE.

Gronn states that he found a leak in the brake before lie set out from Ballarat. A fitter patched up the hole with spun yarn, but the repair was not effective. He tried to get repairs at various points, but sever.'.l of the stations were not furnished with proper appliances. When he ve'clied Ararat he reported the state of the engine, but a* there was no other available he had to go on. At Stowell there was a fitter, but he did not have sufficient material to complete the repairs, and lie (Gronn) had to take the train back to Ballarat.
He consulted with Coward, and asked him—though contrary to the regulations —to take charge of the train from Coward's engine, owing to the defective condition of his (Gronn's) engine. After leaving Ararat the defect increased in his engine, and was practieally without brake nower.
On reaching Beaufort the signals wer« all right, but approaching the station the train got out of control, and dashed into the dead «nd&'.
