PRISON STATISTICS.

Sydney, Last Night. The prisons report .shows that the prison population at the end of last year was 14;i0, compared with 1500 at the end of the previous year. The expenditure was £88,307, compared with •£129,059 in 1895.

Melbourne, February 9,

Provisionally to calling tenders for the new service between Australia and Canada the Postmaster-General has extended the existing contract for another year from July :)1 next. Tenders for the "proposed new service, which will lie along the present route, will be for three or five years. The contractor is to be left to specify any other route, and to declare what the extra or reduced subsidy will be.
