DISTRICT NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondents.) TARAMAUKU. A working bee was' formed by the settlers here to improve the Pukeho school ground, and the ladies of the district prepared afternoon tea. After school was out the children were informed that there was a presentation to fee made, extra prizes to be given to those children who had attended school every day last year, the recipients being Olive Watt, Mary Mackie, Miriam Burr, Bertha Burr, David Burr. Leslie Watt; Max Watt, Jack Mackie, and Harold Cole. The prizes were nine beautifullyframed pictures. A word of prais'e is due to the school committee for being so thoughtful. In the evening a euchre party and dance was held to augment the school funds, and was a financial success. fln the ladies' tournament the first m-w was won by Mrs. W. Dowrnan (Matau), and the second prize by Miss Olive Smith. In the gentlemen's 1 tournament Mr. Joe Smith was first and Mr. Jack Drummond second. After the cards the room was cleared for dancing. Messrs. W. and C. Dowman provided the music, and all had a good time. The supply at the factory, considering the stage of the season, is keeping up well. The tests are on the upward grade, and our genial manager (Mr. C. Cameron) is' still keeping up his reputation by turning out a first-grade article. The district is looking well. The recent rain has set the turnips well on, and there is plenty of grass. We are getting the paper very punctually now, thanks to Mr. G. Hanover, our genial jehu. It is all the more appreciated now that it is an up-to-date eight-pager, and is looked forward to with the greatest interest by our settlers. The post office is now open. It Is under the able management of Mrs. A. Watt. We receive nothing but kindness from her hands. The Government would not allow her anything in the nature of remuneration for the first six months. WAREA. The furniture sale held on Tuesday last by Mr. Newton King on account of Mrs. H. Leedom, who is leaving the district, was' fairly well attended, and everything sold at satisfactory prices. Most of the farmers of the district had a day's outing on Tuesday last. Mr. Crockett, the Stock Inspector, was inoculating the calves at Mrs. Judge's yards. This day's' sport happily only conies once a year. Mr. W. Gibbons, of the. Punilio store, who has been on the sick list for this last week or two with a poisoned foot, is improving considerably, and should shortly be about again.
