Among the suggested preventives of floods in Paris is' an overflow canal from St. Baur across St. Denis plain. GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. ; Paris, February 7. The French Government has decided to provide small tradesmen and owners of land pnd houses affected by the floods with credit, to enable them to start afresh. A woman awl a young girl returned to an abandoned house at Alfortville. The 'house immediately collapsed, and the •woman was killed, but the girl was rescued. FURTHER ASSISTANCE ASKED FOR. THE SEINE AGAIN RISING. Received February 8, 10.35 p.m. Paris, February 8. The French Government asks Parliament for a further £SOO,OOO to compensate the flood sufferers. After falling 14 feet, the Seine is again showing a tendency to rise ; owing to the mild weather melting the snow. The river Seine traverses Paris in a semi-circular curve, having a length of Beven miles in the city. It is crossed by thirty-one bridges, some of them with beautiful structural effects. Among the famous bridges are the Pont Ncuf, Pont de Notre Dame, Pont de la Concorde, Pont d' Austerlitz, Pont d' lena, and the new and magnificent Pont Alexandre 111. The river forms two islands 5n the centre of the city—the He de la Cite and the He St. Louis. The quays along the banks form one of the most attractive features of Paris.
