MONTHLY XIEETINC. The ordinary monthly meeting of t'ie Taranaki County Council was hold yesterday. Present. Crs. J. R. Hill, K.'.-M- ---' lanson, C. Andrews. C. Carter. XI. Hopson and R. Stevens. FOREMEN'S REPORTS. Foreman Jones; reported that Xlr. Douch had mushed his contracts. lie iiad earteu out 100 yards ot stone from Xlangatea to Ratapiko. also 730 yards from Xlanganui to Avalanche Mill. Tariki road. The contractor had also finished lik work at XI .....iniawiietu depot. Repairs lia.l I.; .11 effected to the decking- of the Xt . ..atea bridge. Foreman E. Bennett reported that nearly all his time had been taken up in blinding and banking up new metal. The road was in fair order: the rains had settiwd tne loose stones down in the; hills. -Mr. E. bur rev was shifting his sawmill from Bristol road out to Mangaone road, meaning that ho would be carting timber on neariy seven miles of county roaa. Foreman Cheliings reported that he had been engaged making side tracks, rakinj; up loose stones ami blinding the road. The road was cutting up in se\« f'l'iii p*ao. There had 'been a lot of tourist traffic on the road through die mouth. Foreman J. Holmes reported that he had erected the fence on Xlonglume Hill, and made it safe, and widened out the filling where it was wanted. The small bridge that ttos near XL'. Joll's entrance at Waiwakaiiio was on •the boundary of the road. lie had pulled it down, and re-built it. The neck of the large wooden culvert on the Mountain road near Xlr. XlaeGonnall'v was getting very rotten. i-'creman Uu;e reported that Be had been engaged during the month repa ring the liurfora road bridge, and lie had put 011 140 chains of waste oil <n the road at various places. Foreman D. Brosnan reported that he had been at work fillintr in and making side tracks near Okatc. He had also filled in a large gully at the si.le of the road in front of Xlr. Daily's property. This work had improved th? width of the road considerably. The bridges were all in good repair. The groin at Stony River had altered its shape, but it was holding its oini against the river and big floods. Foreman Eva reported that the roads ur>ler his can: were in fair order. His time had been occupied during the month leveliinsi side-tracks, cleaning culverts. water - tables, and general work. The engine had done considerable damage at the top end of ®arrington road, and it would require 20 yards of metal to repair it.
Foreman -M. Norris reported that throughout the month hp liar 1 , been doing general roan work, clearing watertables, raking off loose .stones, blinding, etc. The roads 111 his charge were nil in very fair order, except for a few weak places. TRAFFIC FROM TARATA. Cr.- Carter moved, in pursuance of notice given—"'That a toll-gate he erected on the junction road, near tlie Waitara river, or in lieu thereof, that the Clifton County Council ne cited under the Public "Works Act, to, contribute towards the maintenance of the Junction Road.° In speaking to the motion, the mover said that the Moa riding finances were not so buoyant as to permit of the Junction road being used by the settlers of the neighboring county without some recompense. Nor was it fair tint they should be expected to. Cr. Hopson said the revenue from th-i Soil-gate would not be anything like what the Council expected from the record of the traffic taken on the road recently, for there was an alternative route, the Otaraoa road to Waitara. Cr. Stevens, said that already some of the heavv traffic was being diverted from the Junction road to Waitara by the Otaraoa road, which was a far better road to a market town. It w;is quite oil the cards that tlie next mail contract to Tarata would be from Waitara instead of from Jngleivood. This was a- matter that interested the Inglewood business people, hut one or two whom he had seen seemed to consider it not wortli bothering about. But a toil-gate between Tarata and Tngle--woo'd would have the effect of reducing the country trade of the latter town. Cr. Hopson mentioned that the settlers of the Tarata district had raised ,a £IOOO loan for the road. IE was decided to cite the Clifton County Council for a contribution of £SO annually. GENERAL. Mr. C. F. Dowsett, engineer to the Clifton County Council, forwarded a schedule and estimate t>f cost of repairs necessary to the Tikorangi suspension 'bridge, this Council being liable for twoflftlis of the cost.—Crs. (* 1 e it cr again complained of the practice of driving loose hordes on the Elliot road. —The" Council decided '.o take steps to stop the practice, it 'being pointed out that the, horses were doing a lor, of damage to the footpaths. Mr. C. Penn. clerk to the Stratford .Comitf Council, forwarded of a .resolution to the eil'ec.t that owing to 'the Waipulai bridge being so much nearer to the headquarters oi the Sti.itjord Council, it would lie better for !,he PtnitTord council t -° ' l:,ve control. The Council considered there was lio necessity tor altering the existing -r--rancfcment, whereby thi> Council nas control. , lii answer to a letter from Mr. 1. I. • ■lTughson with reference to crossings required at the entrance to his property at Westown, the <devk was instructed .'to reply that the Council does not put in private, crossings. • Mrs. Sumner wrote, complaining that the Council had done nothing to imnrove the state of the entrance to Hie Victoria, road from the South road, which was now impassable to all but lirfil traffic. —To be attended i". 'Mr. Thomas Yeale nsked the Council to continue the metalling of Devon Line to the entrance of Veaie's estate, and stated that last winter it was impossible to sain access to the, property. It was pointed out that this portion of Devon road was not a county road, bur, was under the jurisdiction of the Bar-
ret Road Board, and Xlr. Veale will be recommended to apply to that body. Messrs Eva Bros, offered £l3 18s for the county paddocks at the Waiw.iJcaiho, aud undertook to keep iavze down and fences in repair.—A yeat y ■tenancy will be offered.
