NELSONS NEW INDUSTRY

A PROGRESSIVE COMPANY, Two years ago Nelson, renowned as. he land of orchards, hops', and barley, iet out to have a ineat-freezing works >f its own. The secretary of the Nelson freezing Company, Mr. W. S. Hampson, las been spending a few days in Welngton on his way home from the Christ:hurch Meat Conference, and when seen >y a reporter spoke most optimistically )f the prospects of Nelson's new industry. When the company started opemj ' tions there were those who declared that sheep could not be fattened in Nelson, and that not more than 7000 carcas'es at the outside would be got away in the first season. The most hopeful of those interested in the concern did not expect an output of more than 20,000 carcases at the outside, and were *very pleasantly surprised when the tally ran at over 22.000. This year anything from ■30,000 to 35,000 s'heep will be put 'through. The quality of the output, Mr. Hampson states, is also exceeding the general anticipation. The prices obtained for the different shipments have "run consistently within one-eighth of a penny of those obtained for the best ■Canterbury. The shipment despatched by the Karamoa about a fortnight ago has already been sold at a satisfactory figure, two offers being received for it almost as soon as it was on the water. "Everybody used to tell us," Mr.: Hampson stated, "that we could never turn out sheep in Nelson in any quantity suitable for freezing. Not only are we doing that—our advices from London state that we are sending Home just what is wanted in weight and condition —but we are now beginning to have competition for our shipments at this early stage in the day. There is now every probability that we shall be able to maintain through the season regular monthly shipments of 5000 carcases."
