Speaking at a gathering at Auckland last week, Dr. Purdy declared that New Zealand was the healthiest country in the world. Its native race had ranked highest among the colored races of the world, and there were many whose ros'y optimism led them to believe that the New Zealanders of the future were going to be amongst the greatest people of the world. It was all very well, Dr. Purdy added, for the residents of this country to take such an interest and ' pride in the athletic champions it had produced, but he regretted that a little more prominence was not given to pride of place in mental as well as physical attainments. For instance, m Professor Eutherford New Zealand had produced one of the cleverest aad most brilliant scholars the world had known. Again, it was not until ]ie recently picked up an Egyptian newspaper that he learnt ' tiia/fc the man who had succeeded to the position of pro-Consul in Egypt, Sir Eldon Gorst, was a native of the Waikato. At present the tendency in New Zealand was to worship the physical more than the mental, but he did not thmk that would last many years' '-nger. —Star. A WORD TO TRAVELLERS. The excitement incidental to travelling and change of water and food often bring on diarrhoea, colic and pain in the stomach, and for this reason iO one should leave home without a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. It can always be depended upon to effect a quick cure. It cannot be procured when on board train or steamer, and that is when it is most likely to be needed, and for thi3 reason should always be procured before leaving home. " "»t f^a
