WAITARA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, when there were present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Tate, Birdling, Rattonbwy, Kleimer, Spurdle, Black, and Brabant. - Correspondent-.• v.r.s read from J. Soll'c offering his services ■'.-,' dog-tax collector on the s:'.ii.c terms as in previous years; a'so .u.u Edward Reynolds applying for the same position. The Deputy Valuer-General wrote stating that the question of the borou;']i revision was now under consideration. Messrs. Orbell and Mackay. engineers, informed the Council that the survey and levels of the pipe lino from the intake to the Mainaki road have been completed, and also plans, with the exception of certain works at the intake. Plans have also been forwarded to the Spiral Pipe Company and the District ! Engineer of Railways, Wanganui. As soon as the tunnel shafts are completed they will call tenders for excavating the tunnel. They have also arranged with the District Engineer of Railways' that the maximum amount of water that the Railway Department should have in exchange for allowing the Council to lay pipes, etc., on railway reserves is to be 10,000 gallons a day at Lepperton Junction, and 3000 gallons a day at Waitara for practical purposes. The secretary of the Waitara Harbor Board wrote stating that the Board's solicitor had been instructed to proceed with its preparation. The balance-sheet for the year ending 31s't March, 1908, was returned duly audited, and was adopted by the Council. The Domain Board's balance-sheet was also returned from the Auditor and adopted by the Council.
It was resolved that application be made to the Harbor Board for permission to allow the water-pipes to no over the bridge and the drainagenpipes to go into the river. It was resolved that the dog-tax be fixed as follows: ss' for collie, sheep, or cattle dogs and 10s for other dogs, reducible to 2s Gd and 7s Gd respectively if paid on or before 31st March. Mr. J. Soffe was appointed collector for the ensuing year. A special meeting of the Council is to be held on tha 15th instant for the purpose of opening tenders for the tunnel contract in conneotion with the waterworks. Tenders' for the borough carting were received from C. Ayton and P. Taylor, and it was resolved that the Mayor's action in accepting C. Ayton's tender be accepted. It was resolved that the Health Department be informed thart the Council lavors the appointment of an mspeetoi under the Health Act, and is agreeable to either (a) contribute a sum per annum on either a population or valuation basis, provided all other local bodies enter into a like agreement, or (b) are willing to contribute the sum of £lO per annum irrespective of what other local bodies do. Accounts amounting to general jg.187 7s' Gd and water £IS4 7s 2d were passed for payment.
