DOMINION'S POPULATION.
SOME INTERESTING FfGUKKS. By Telegraph.—Press' Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Gazette to-night states that the population of New Zealand at December 31st (exclusive of Maoris) was 982,923; Maoris 47,731. Cook and other islands bring the gross total to ],042,994. The male numbered 552.105 and females 490,829. There are 2524 Chinese (07 females) in the Dominion. During 1909 the population increased by 22,281, or 2.22 per cent. The excess of birtlis over deaths contributed 17,582 to the increase, and the excess of arrivals over departures 4719. The Dominion's birthrate during the last year was 27.29 per 1000 and the death-rate 9.22, compared with 27.45 and 9.57 respectively.
