THE ANTARCTIC.
AN AMERICAN EXPEDITION. COMMANDER PEARY'S PROPOSALS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Received February ,'S, 10.5 p.m. New York, February 3. The National Geographical Society of the United States has received with acclamation and referred to the Finance and Research Committee Commander Peary's proposal, on behalf of the Arctic. Club, for an Antarctic expedition. The chVb will contribute the steamship Roosevelt, conditional on the Society granting 50,000 dollars towards the expenditure, and both institutions sharing the balance of the expense. Commander Peary suggested the expedition should reach the coast of the Antarctic continent in March, 1911, at a point directly opposite to Commander Scott's base. The American and British camps would be 2,000 miles apart, and he calculated that the Pole would be reached by the end of December. Commander Peary U unable to conduct the expedition personally, because sledge work requires so much physical exertion as would need a younger man.
