Further tests have been made in coilflection with concrete in the Wellington dock, with the object of finding a cement which would prove satisfactory ■for concrete to be deposited in deep water. Mr. Bolton, a member of the Board, Said he was hopeful that the difficulty would be overcome. He thought it was only a question of quality and quantity of cement to be nsed. Mixing the ee- ! meat, in all known qualities had been tried, but apparently in vain. The Board's advisers were looking as far away as Japan for guidance. It was stated that concrete in Japan was put down as deep as here, the secret being j the volcanic ingredient scoria. With the raid of this it was considered the dock,: j could be completed at a cost of a few '•xtra thousands, without the costly expedient of a coffer-dam. A sum of £250,000 is earmarked for 'the dock, including the amount of the contract £100,201. Up to September ; 30th the Board spent £30.540, including £12,000 progress payments to contractors.
