STREETS AS CANALS. DAMAGE EXCEEDS £40,000,000. PILLAGERS SUMMARILY PUNISHED By Cable—Press Association.—Copyright Paris, February 1. Many miles of streets in both the rich and tho poor quarters of the city are still practically canals', whereon boats by day and night carry mails, telegrams, provisions and fuel. It is now certain that the original estimate of the damage at £40,000,000 sterling will be far exceeded in Paris and suburbs, without reckoning loss of employment by hundreds of workers. French bluejackets pursued a boatload of Apaches at Alfortville. Shots Were exhanged. The Apaches' boat was sunk and two were drowned. One was hanged from a telephone pole. Eight male and female thieves in Paris were stripped and maltreated by an infuriated mob. While being escorted to priscfi a pillager caught at Ivry, near Paris, endeavoured to upset the police boat. The policemen fastened .him with a rope and threw him overboard and towed him till he was unconscious. Many Parisions have sent motor Cars laden with loaves. The people of the Gennevilliers district are frequently hostile, believing the dyke at Gennevilliers was cut in order to save Paris. THE RELIEF FUNDS.
