WHANGAMOMONA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above took place oil the 20th instant, when there were present: Crs. W. A. McCutehan (in the chair), E. 13. Roberton, J. M. Jones, R. McCluggage, and T. Mcllroy. The Council went into committee to consider tenders for the supply of dog collars and applications for the position of dog-tax collector. On resuming it was 1 reported that Henry Wilson's tender liad been accepted for the supply of dog collars, and that G. Petersen had been appointed dog-tax collector. The report was adopted. The engineer's report was read, and it was resolved that the engineer's suggestion concerning maintenance of the Ohura and Mohakau roads (Strathmore Riding) be given effect to; that the engineer's recommendation concerning the plant offered to the Council by Messrs. Cameron and Brooking be given effect to, and Messrs. Cameron and Brooking advised accordingly; that Messrs. Cameron and Brooking be asked to submit a price for the delivery of 300 yards of metal en the Ohura ro i'l between the 20-mile and 22-mile pegs, the matter to be left in the engineer's •hands with power to accept their offer if advisable; and that the Railway Department be requested to advise whether it is prepared to deliver mtai at Te W era forthwith, and at what price. The engineer's report was then adopted. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote in reference to the matter of obtaining firewood from reserves on the Prospect road, and it was decided to I wire the Commissioner, asking him to expedite his letter to the Minister for Lands, and that in view of the importance and urgency of the work he be requested to favorably endorse the Council's application. Mr. J. Biggins waited on the Council "with reference to his claim for compensation for loss' alleged to have oeen sustained by him on account of the deviation on Brewer road. The Council ■decided to review the matter afresh, and considerable time was devoted to a discussion of the claim. It was then resolved to again refer copies of all the correspondence between Mr. Diggins and the Council (o the countv solicitors ■with a request that they furnish a full written opinion as to the Council's liability (if any) in connection with the matter the engineer and clerk to see the county solicitors and furnish tli-m "with all other necessary information It was also resolved to advise Mr. Diggins that the Council was seeking further advice, which would be considered at its next meeting, and Mr. Diggins then informed of the decision arrived at by the Council. It was resolved to instruct the county solicitors to forthwith sue all ratepayers in arrcar with their special and general rates in reject of the financial year 1908-9. A special order striking a special rate of iy»d in the pound (unimproved value) over the Mangaowhata road loan special rating area was 1 instituted. A month's extension of time in which to interview the member for the district in reference to the maintenance of Ohura road was granted to the Strathmore riding members. Accounts totalling .£OOO 5s were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned. r •
