HOW THE LIBERALS WERE SAVED. ADOPTION OF THE BUDGET ANTICIPATED. *•* THE SPECTATOR ON THE SITUATION. Received January 31, 10 p.m. London, January 31. The Spectator (a Conservative journal), summarising the election situation, feaid that only their_nominal adherence to free exchange saved the Liberals' from destruction. If tariff reformers had abandoned the idea of taxing bread, meat and cheese, and asked only for taxation of manufactured articles other than those consumed in the way of food, the Liberals would have been heavily defeated. While depriving the Government of power to do any of the things it desired, the electors were unwilling to give a victory to tariff reform, —r ' • The Spectator anticipated the adoption of the Budget after Nationalist attempts to reduce the whisky tax. It Suggests' a compromise with the Lords •by a Bill declaring the Lords' inability to reject pure money bills and prescribing non-interference with finance bills Operating for one year.
