DEPRECIATION OF STEAMERS. A striking illustration of the rapidity with which shipping generally, even elaborately fitted-up mail steamers, depreciate in value is afforded by the recent sale of five of the Peninsular and Oriental Company's vessels, the Victoria, Britannia, Peninsula, Malacca and Formosa. The two. first-named were favorite vessels wit% Australians, and aft:r being engaged on'the mail line for mainyears passed'last year into the hands of the foreigner. Sir Thomas Sutiieilaiul last month told the shareholders <of the company that the five steamers siamed originally cost the company £050.000, and had been disposed of for the sum of £45,000. Sir Thomas added that the fleet of the company is the most costly under the British flag, the total sum paid for the vessels now in commission having been £9,250,000. I JAPAN'S EUROPEAN SERVICE. Our ambitious allies in Japan are not content that the steamship lines with which they girdle the earth shall loiter in the race. Accordingly the Nippon Yusen Kaisha make the interesting announcement that their European service is to bo completely rc-modclled. The majority of the older steamers will be withdrawn, and six powerful new twinscrew vessels, each of SSOO tons gross register, substituted. These fine modern vessels performed a voyage or two during last year as extra vessels, and have become exceedingly popular with passengers and shippers'. Their accommodation is of a character in keeping with the ever-increasing demands of the ocean voyager, while the victualling is of the highest class. A further new departure will be a call at Marseilles every fourteen days, instead of monthly as at present. The speed will be increased ,and the voyage from London fo Kobe reduced to forty-five days as against forty-seven days as formerly, and this notwithstanding the call at Marseilles. Some of the older vessels will be utilised as extra steamers, according to requirements. OVERSEA VESSELS DUE AT WELLINGTON.
