' l'n view of the Xew Plymouth Harbor Y'.Oftrd'p intention to dredge the bottom ,of the harbor to a depth of 30ft, the following from the Poverty Bay Herald will be read with interest:—'Tlith "•- to Wellington has been made the pore of departure of the largest ocean liners, .'ind even there care has to be exeroisod in taking out of harbor these great vessels when deeply loaded. A chart of Wellington harbor .shows that off Worser Bay, between the Steeple Rock and tJonlon Point, there are soundings of 81ft and ;!;sft. and a little to the'right or left patches of from 2(!ft to 2!»fl. Tiiis does not give much margin to a deeply laden modern steamship, especiai- ■ )y if there he a swell rolling up the harbor, and it would be safer, even at . ] Wellington, for sukli vessels to fllwavs choose high .water, which gives an additional "'/-ft for their time of departure. Auckland and Wellington, it may he inter; sting to point out. are the only ports in the Dominion from which ..lie. Uvaipara. with the draught stated, could have taken her departure. At Lyitelton a channel is being dredged to 2Sft, but a uniform depth to this extent has ,_ not yet been attained.
