The Rosamond, which has taken up .the Kotuku's running, arrived about midnight from Wellington and Pieton. She has about 100 tons of cargo for this port and discharging operations will commence this morning. PRODUCE FROM WAITARA. The following cargo was taken from Waitara by the Rakaia, which left Wellington for London on Wednesday: 2439 quarters beef, 870 carcases mutton, 374 carcases lamb, 175 carcases pork, 404 .boxes frozen sundries, 145S bales wool, 108 casks tallow, 71 casks 0100, 14 casks pelts, 5 casks casings, 2G sacks hides, and 251 cases canned meats. The Rakaia also took from Waitara for Gibralter 752 quarters beef and 324 carcases mutton. The next vessel to call at Waitara .will be the Morayshire, now at Dunedin, which loads produce for West < f England ports. From Dunedin the vessel will proceed to Waitara, Wanganui, Wellington (where she is due about February 14th), Timaru and Lyttelton. .She is fixed to sail from Lyttelton on February 2Gth for Avonmouth.
SUBMERGED ROCKS. The proposal of the New Plymouth Harbor "Board to sweep the entrance to the harbor and locate any uncharted submerged locks should they exist is one that "will find favor with mariners. As an exchange save, submerged rocks are to ships as tacfcs scattered on a roadway to a bicycle. They puncture. The cyclist sticks a path on, and speeds on. The shipmaster, if his ship is double-bottomed throughout, scorches for a dry dock; if the double-bottom is interrupted by a single-bottom section, and that section has sustained the puncture, be steams for the nearest beach. Passengers, crew, mails, baggage, etc., in order of value, may or may not Ir salvaged —on that depends the interest attaching to'the wreck. Only warships carry collision mats, corresponding to the cvqlist's patch. NEW MASTER OF THE MAORI. Captain B. M. Afihvell, who took command of the turbine steamer Maori ;vt .Wellington last week, is well known on this coast. He is thirty-eight years of age, and is a native of Kent, England, .lie has had an exceptionally extensive seafaring experience in sail and steam. He came out to New /Zealand in 1891 as'second mate of the ship M. E. Watson. from Cardiff. Captain Aldwell then joined various colonial sailing vessois, including the barquentine Chitoor, in which he traded between Sydney and the Solomon Islands for about eighteen months. He was also mate of the •barque Ganymede for some time. In 1897 he was captain of the barquentine Ilanda Isle for six months, and in the following year joined the Union Company's service as third officer of the Rotorua. Captain Aldwell passed through the various officers' grades until about three years ago, when chief officer of the Moeraki, he was given command cf ■the Hawea.
