Shortly after the llaurou, icit Rarotonga for Wellington on the 17th instil transpired that the ship's butcher. ■William White, was missing. This was on the morning of the Tstli. and a thorough search of the ship failed discover any traces of tiie man. He had been talking (lie previous night with one of the engineers, this being after the sleamer had taken her departure for Wellington. It is possible that White, who was about 35 years of age. had accidentally fallen overboard. IHs reported that (lie man had been in depressed spirits, and appeared to be suffering from melancholia'. Not much seems to be known pbout. White, except that lie panic from JTasl- i ings. England. It was not ascertainable to-day whether he had any relations in New Zealand.
