Shanivulaiam, a Mahoinmedan inspec- | tor in the Criminal Investigation Da ■ partmeiit, who was largely for the discovery of the Midnapur conspiracy, was shot dead in the High Court, Calcutta, while leaving the court, where the Alipnr case was being tried. A Bengali youth, aged 18, fired two linches away from Shamvulaiam's body. He then lied into th" street and threw a bomb at the mounted policeman. The bomb, however, failed to explode. The youth was arrested. Two previous attempts had been made to murder Shamvulalam. The event caused the utmost sensation among the European community, who declare that the limit of patience has been reached and demand new laws of the utmost severity.
