SWIMMING.
At the Baths on Saturday a relay race and a polo match took place between the East End and the West End.
The relay race was swum first, and resulted in an easy win for the West End by a dozen yards. The East End got their revenge in the polo match, which they won by 3 goals to 1. Pfankuch and Turnbull each shot a goal in the first spell for East End. and in the second spell Pfankuch added another goal, while Laing scored one for West End.
To-night ,at 0 o'clock, the Beach and the East End will plav their second round fixture. The following will represent East End: —Cooper, Watson, Harle, Turnbull, Kennedy, Pfankuch, and Chamberlin. From the result of the East End v. Beach polo match last week it looks as if the East would probably retain the challenge shield for another year. But there are uncertainties in polo as in other games, and the result of the competition is yet quite open. The East have a strong team this - year, and all the players are able to handle the ball fairly well.
Pfankuch at,' centre forward played a fine game, and though he wandered round the bath a good deal more than a centre generally should, this was necessary in this match where his wings' were rather weak. The wings, Kennedy and Chamberlin, were both playing their first game, and so were quite unexperienced. However, they are 'both keen and can handle the ball, and should develop in time into good players. Turnbull at half had a lot of solid work to do, arid Cooper at goal is a safe eustodian. Watson at full back is very persistent and played a fine game. He must be very careful, however, not to obstruct. Harle. as the other full back, was also very persistent in his attention to his opponent; he must, however, learn to handle the ball better.
The Beach did not play with the same combination as the East. I look to them, howeVer, to put up a good fight in tl'.e second round, and mayhap to turn the tables on the leaders. The selectors' will earlv this week choose the team for Auckland, and on Thursday night at the sports they will play a team .picked from tlie remainder of the club. It is hoped the remainder of the club players will co-operate and give the representative team as much practice as possible, as it is only by practice that combination can be obtained. and combination in polo i,s the first essential for success.
The programme for the sports meeting at the baths on Thursday night next is a very vajied one and should attract good entries. There are several novelty events which have not yet been presented in New Plymouth, and the club is deserving of encouragement from the public, in the way of a full house. It seems as if the representative team from the club to compete at Auckland in the New Zealand championships next month will have to bear all their own expenses. This is hardly as it should be, and some means of raising something towards the expenses' should be devised. I am sure the public, of New : .Plymouth would patronise an effort to " raise the wind" in some way. It is hoped to get something from the sports on Thursday night! and if they are financially successful. to have another meeting next month.
Bell man's buff, which is an item on Thursday's' programme, has had a great run at Home. Tt is the first time it has been put on in New Plymouth, and. I believe, iu New Zealand.
