A train at Sudbury (Ontavio) became derailed, and struck a bridge over the Spanish River. Several ears plunged into the stream, which was covered with twelve inches ot ice. Tlie Sudbury express, containing a first-class carriage and dining-car. plunged o0 feet into the river. The second-class cars crashed into the stone abuttmenc, killing twenty. Reynolds, the guard, who was lunching n the dining-car when the catas-| trophc occurred, dived out while the car was sinking, scaled a ear a»ul 'assisted the smaller passengers to escape through the ventilators. He then smashed a hole in the roof with an axe, enabling seven to escape. The car finally caught fire. A blizzard that was raging prevented the recovery of the bodies. The temperature was below zero. It is estimated that 40 to 70 were killed. A NEW COMET. PLAINLY SEEN TX EUROPE. Received 24, 10.5" p.m. London, January 24. The new comet has been plainly seen in many parts of England, Southern Europe an Egypt. Tile Cambridge Observatory states that the comet passed its perihelion on the 17th. two million miles from the sun. The tail is six degrees long, curved to the east.
