The yarding of lat lambs totalled 5450. I'rices were firmer by several pe»icc per head, file bulk of the yarding changing hands at 12s to 13s. A tew extra pens sold at 13s Id to 13s 7d, and light lambs made 10s to lis 9d.
There was a large entry of fat sheep. The range of prices was': Prime wethers 14s Od to 17s 4d, lighter 13s 4d to lis 3d, prime ewes lis od to 13s sd, extra to 15s Id, otliers 8s 4d to lis. Steers made £0 15s to £9 2s Od, heifers £5 os to £8 7a Od, and cows £4. to x 7 lus—equal to 19s to 21s Od for prime, 18s Od to 19s Od for medium, and 17s to 18s for cow and inferior beef per 1001b. Veal calves made 4s 6d to oOs, according to size and quality. There was good demand for store cattle, yearlings making 32s to 34s 15 to 18-months £2 Is to £2 19s, 2-year steers £3 14s, 2-year heifers £3 2s to £3 ss, 3-year steers £5 to £5 2s Ou, 3-year heifers; £4, and dry cows 30s to £4 10s; dairy cows sold at £3 10s to £8 2s Od.
There was a medium entry of pigs, which met with rather better denianu than last week. Heavy baconers made 42s to 48s, and lighter 35ti to 40s—>
to V/od to 3%u per lb; large porkers 28s to 30s, and lighter 24s to 27s—equal to 4'/od to 4%d per lb; large stores 28s, smaller 18s to 245, and weaners 10s 0d to 15s. DUNEDIN. At Burnside stock market 210 head oi cattle were forward, making a large yarding of fair quality, including a fewpens' of heavy bullocks. Prices were well maintained, especially for well-fin-ished bullocks and heifers. Best bullocks £0 to £lO, extra to £lO 7s ou, medium £7 10s to £9; best heifers to £.7 10s, lighter £5 os to £0 10s. H'at sneep.—lU(S penned, nicludiucr a a large proportion of prime wethers and •wes. The entry was' insufficient for butchers' requirements, and prices were firmer by Is Od per head. Best wethers 14s Od to 10s Od, extra to 17s 9d, medium 12s Od to 14s; best ewes 12s to 13s, extra to 15s Od medium lis' to I 12s, others 9.* to 10s. Fat Lambs.—o9o penned, the quality all round being good. Butchers held a number of lambs from last week's big yarding, and prices did not show much advancement. Best 8s Od to 10s Od, extra to 12s Gd, medium 7s to Sa. Pigs—There was a large yarding, with j the result that the market was glutted and prices snidl. Suckers 5s to Bs, slips 13s to 10s, stores 20s to 25=', porkers and baconers 33s to 30s, light baconei's 38s j to 435, heavy baconers 44s to 48s.
LONDON WOOL SALES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram from their London house, under date 18th instant:—"There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales to-duy, competition by Home, Continental, and American buyers' being active. Tne opening catalogues were fairly representative. As compared with last sales' closing rates prices are about 10 per cent, higher for medium and coarse greasy erossbreds, aad about 5 per cent, to V/-i per cent, hijjher for crossbred slipe. The market for merinos and line erossbreds is very firm."
Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report: At our Martun sale on Tuesday, lStii January, we had a very good yarding o: sheep and a fair entry of tattle. Owing to the good rains and the advance in the price uf fats, all classes of sheep sold readily at advanced rates. Cattle also met a ready sale. Bidding at the start of the sale was not animated, but improved towards the cud, and we have to report aa .almost tot a I clearance at prices slightly in excess of those ruling at late sales. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., report having held i heir opening stock sale at Paluut.umi on Tuesday. A large entry came to hand, 1000 in all, consisting mostly of breeding ewes and wethers. The attendance of buyers was very good, and bidding was brisk. The firm cleared nearly everything at the followin rates: Good forward 4-tooth wethers 10s lOd, 2-tooth wethers and ewes (mixed) 10s (id, fresh full-mouth ewes tin to Bs, woolly rape lambs Vs tin to 7s 3d, cull lambs 2s Od to 4s 3d. 'I hey also sold privately a line of fat and forward 3-year-old steers at £(i 10s. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their Johnsonville sale, held on Wednesday,' as follows: We ottered a heavy yarding of prime sheep and bullocks to a good attendance of buyers. Competition was good, and everything offered was sold under the hammer, wethers and lambs being firmer than was the case at last sale.
