Xo :-,;.;i came till tin' first match was many through, and then the weather broke, heavy showers which almost obliterated the targets sweeping across the range. For a time the shuoUsts kept up against the unruly elements, but had to give in just before finishing the match. The value of Palmerston as a shooting centre was again demonstrated by the tact that the entries were a record. Over a hundred competitors from all parts of the Island have gathered to out up the very substantial programme presented by the local association. There are representatives from Opaki. Wellington, Taranaki, Dannevirke, Hastings, Feeding. Marlon. Wanganui, Masterton, Woodvillo. N'elson, Levin, Otaki, and l'araparauinu while a large local entry i>.' competing. An additional attraction this year is the \V. H. Field shield, which is olt'ered for competition among the clubs in the Otaki electorate. The Hautere Rifle Club are the present holders, and there are live teams eligible: Xgntaiwa, Shannon, Levin, llaulere and
Whereroa. Among the cracks present at the meeting are ex-champions Hyde and R. .L King, of Opaki, and A. Hallinger, the veteran Wcllingtonian. Rillinger, it will be remembered, retired from shooting after a wonderful record covering twenty years. The Linton Match ivn> won by "Rifleman 0. Whiting (Wharcroa R.C.), £3. (18; Rifleman E. 0. The Manawatu match was won by R. .1. King (Opaki). with (18, Corporal Kells (Palmerston X.) being second. Sergt. (Law (Dannevirke) and Lieut. Xeilson each take £2, and Rifleman Lever (Levin), Stubbiiis (Levin), McCalmont and G. Hyde (Opaki) each won £l.
In tho benefit mate'ii. at fiOO yards, Corporal Kells (Palmerston North) topped the list with 34, winning, £1 10s. King (Opaki) won £1 Is, and , Baurstow (Nelson) and Ballingcr (Opaki) came next, winning 15s each. King tops the list for the Ferguson aggregate with 10fl, and winning 30s, Corporal Kells (Palmerston North) 107, Sergt. Law (Dannevirke) 195, and Rifleman H. Marshall (Karori) 193 being next, winning CI each. Corporal Kells (Palmerston North Rifles) leads King (Opaki) for the grand aggregate by 2 points, 103 to 191. Fifteen teams of five men will compete i« the team?) match for the Greer Shield.
