The Rev. the Hon.. 11. J. The new Commissioner of Police for. South Australia is Inspector Raymond,, who joined the force as third-class mounted constable in came a second-class officer three years' later; obtained his sergeantcy in 1886; ■was acting-sub-inspector in 1001, and inspector in 1004; and when senior inspector was selected to succeed Commissioner Madley. In the early sixties the new Commissioner had to deal with wild and dangerous aboriginals, aiul it took men of solid stamina and imperturbable natures (says the Adelaide Register) to deal with the natives. Since 1005 he has been in charge of the mounted division of the force. Commissioner Raymond is sixty-three years old.

Dr. Bernard C, Beale, one of Auckland's oldest and most widely-known citizens, died on Sunday, aged seventynine years. Dr. Beale, who was' born in London in 1830, was educated at first privately and then at the London Hospital Medical College. He was appointed medical officer to the London Board of Health in 184!). He passed his final medical examination in 1852, and in the same year he visited the West Pndies and Demerara. lie was medical officer on the Earl of Belcarras, which carried troops to Bombay in the same year. He came to New Zealand in 1861, and on arrival was appointed surgeon to the Xelion Hospital, which position lie held for three years. He then went to Auckland, and for about twenty-five years resided in the Waikato district.

The Rev. Herbert C. Pollock, Canon Residentiary and Bice-Dean of Rochester, who is to be in charge of the Mission of Help in New Zealand, arrived in Wellington from Sydney by the " rimoo on Wednesday. lli> object is to visit the various places at which the mission will be held and practically prepare the way for the visiting clergy who leave England in July and arrive here in time to commence work on September 1.-t next. It may be explained that the mission emanates from New Zealand, and is worked by the bishops and clergy here. The Rev. Mr. Pollock, who is accompanied by his wife and familyhas come out at the wish of the English committee to make arrangements for the work of the visiting clergy. He will be in the Dominion some three or four months.
