TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

ADJOL'u!~D MEETING. The adjourned meeting of the Timlin ki County Council was held yest:;'-. dny. There were present: Councillor J. Brown (chairman), J. 11. Hill, G. V. Tate, C. E. Allaiison, C. Andrews, C. Carter. M. Hopson, and R. Stevens. Mr. J. B. Jack R'eserves Agent, wrote that some time ago a quantity of stone was taken from the Stoney river near Okato by Mr. Sole, acting as the Council's contractor. This river bounded land belonging to the Public Trustee, whose title extended lo the middle line of the river. All leases from the PubJic Trustee contained a .provision excepting metals from the lease. The stone in the river therefore remained the property of the Public Trustee, notwithstanding that the surface of the land had been leased. He had therefore to request that the usual royalty on the stone taken be paid to him; that is. the value of the stone apart from the surface damage to the land, the hitter being payable to the occupier.—Cr. Andrews said it was questionable whether the stone was taken from the reserve or not, for the river now was not •in the same place as it was when the lease was issued. He was one of the interested parties, and was taking legal advice on the point. The Inglewood Electric Lighting €o. was granted permission to erect a transmission line along the Mountain road from Inglewood to the Maketawa factory—Granted, subject to the usuil conditions.

_ On the recommendation of Mr. Quilliam, county solicitor, it was decided to request the Waitara Borough Coun?il to take the necessary legal steps under the Municipal Corporations Act in '•■?- gard to their application to lay watermains along the county roads." The chairman said there was no desire to hamper the corporation in any wav. but it was always as well to proceed in the prescribed manner in these things, and more satisfactory to all concerned.

Messrs. A. E. R. Pearson and W. Lausrhlin were ap'ointed dog-tax collectors in the Omata and Hurworth ridings, respectively.
