FLOODS IN AUSTRALIA

Though the floods are receding, wide areas are still under water, and many outlying places are cut oil'. The Josses of stock are very heavy. Round Gun nedah it is estimated that 20j000 slieej and cattle perished. The stench from decaying animals forms a menace to the health of the town. Hundreds of other cattle after swimming for miles managed to escape. People returning to their homes after two days' absence found them in a terrible state. They were deep in filth and in some cases blocked with dead animals. Amongst other heavy losses is the North-Western Grain Company, Avhieh had 20.000 bags of wheat ruined. The Government is affording help to distressed families in the flooded districts. As a result of the damage to the waterworks and electric plants, Tamworth will be without light and water for some days. IIINES AND DREDGES DAMAGED. Received January 10. 12.30 a.m. Sydney, January JB. The flood at Ban-aba was the highest for 45 years, flooding the mines at Inverell and Bingha, and causing serious damage. Several mining dredges were sunk. Communication with Moree and Weewaa is still interrupted, and no further details have been reported of the drowning disaster.
